APA STATEMENT ON GID AND THE DSM

APA STATEMENT ON GID AND THE DSM

May 9, 2008

The American Psychiatric Association has received inquiries about the
DSM-V process, particularly concerns raised about the Sexual and
Gender Identity Disorders Work Group.

The APA has a long-standing mission to provide guidelines for the
diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, based on the most
current clinical and scientific knowledge. Through advocacy and
education of the public and policymakers, the APA also affirms it
commitment to reducing stigma and discrimination.

The DSM addresses criteria for the diagnosis of mental disorders.
The DSM does not provide treatment recommendations or guidelines.
The APA is aware of the need for greater scientific and clinical
consensus on the best treatments for individuals with Gender Identity
Disorder (GID). Toward that end, the APA Board of Trustees voted to
create a special APA Task Force to review the scientific and clinical
literature on the treatment of GID. It is expected that members of
the Task Force will be appointed shortly.

There are 13 DSM-V work groups. Collectively, the work group members
will review all existing diagnostic categories in the current DSM.
Each work group will be able to make proposals to revise existing
diagnostic criteria, to consider new diagnostic categories, and to
suggest deleting existing diagnostic categories.

All DSM-V work group proposals will be based on a careful, balanced
review and analysis of the best clinical and scientific data.
Evidence accumulated from work group members and hundreds of
additional advisors to the DSM-V effort will be considered before
final recommendations are made.

The Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders Work Group, chaired by
Kenneth J. Zucker, Ph.D., will have 13 members who will form three
subcommittees:

    * Gender Identity Disorders, chaired by Peggy T. Cohen-Kettenis, Ph.D.
    * Paraphilias, chaired by Ray Blanchard, Ph.D.
    * Sexual Dysfunctions, chaired by R.
My dream house

I just woke up a few minutes ago at 2:30 from the most incredible dream. I was in my dream house and this was not like anything I've ever experienced there before. If you do not know anything about dream houses, they are a house you return to many times in your dreams that represent your life.

I know the layout of my dream house very well. And this time I went into the north wing which in the past has been empty except for a few pieces of furnature. I used to go there to escape from things I couldn't deal with. Tonight I went there to get away from my ex who was living in the master suit near the garden atrium and the kitchen. The strangness started out with the stairway to the north wing being clogged with clothing hanging on hooks.

I got into the north wing and it showed signs that there were people living there. Then I started running into live people. One of them took me around, and she showed me that there were maybe 200 people living in this part of my dream house. As we went around I found that they were all connected to me, that I liked them, and that my dream house badly needed repair in certain parts. Some places the ceilings and roof were collapsing, and still people lived there. In the end I put together a budget to spend $3.2 million fixing up my dream house for them.

This dream is in contrast to one a few days ago where I escaped to the river tower sucessfully to be alone. I understand now that I am not alone, and I love you all.

A glimpse of November

Bill Foster (D), a nuclear particle physicist who had never run for public office before defeated Jim Oberweis (R) for the seat of retiring congressman and former House Speaker, Dennis Hastert in IL-14, which has a PVI of R+5 and has sent a Republican to Congress for 11 straight terms. Hastert got 60% of the vote in this suburban Chicago district in 2006 and Bush got 55% in 2004. Foster got 53% of the vote yesterday to Oberweis' 47%. Foster will take office Monday but the two will face off in the general election in November. If Obama is on the national ticket, Oberweis will have virtually no chance. As a sitting congressman, Foster becomes a superdelegate and gets to vote at the DNC. He hasn't announced his choice yet, but the smart money is betting he will support Obama. Even a 1-day politician understands that when a guy helps you get elected, you owe him one.

This is a huge defeat for the GOP in a very high profile race that both parties poured over 1 million dollars into and is a very bad omen for the Republicans in the Fall. If they can't even hold a seat they have held for 20+ years in a strongly Republican district against a newbie who knows nothing about politics, what's going to happen in swing districts with stronger candidates? How are they going to beat the large class of Democratic freshmen under these conditions? To make it worse, many people will see this as a proxy for an Obama-McCain race as the Illinois senator made a TV ad for Foster and Sen. McCain campaigned for Oberweis.

Election 2008: Mar 9

Democrats Abroad

"Chalk up another one for Barack Obama. With the announcement of the results of the Democrats Abroad primary, Obama has now won 11 primaries and caucuses in a row. Democrats Abroad represents the Democrats among the approximately 7 million Americans living outside the U.S. (a population greater than that of 37 of the 50 states). The Democratic Party considers DA to be a state and allocates 22 delegates each with half a vote to it (so Americans from more countries can go to the convention). For the first time ever, DA held an Internet primary. It ran for a week. Democrats in 164 countries voted by Internet, mail-in ballots, and in person at 30 voting centers around the world. The results were announced yesterday with Obama getting 66% of the vote and Clinton getting 32%. Obama gets 5 half-votes and Clinton gets 4 half votes as a result of the regional proportionality rules. Another five half-vote delegates will be selected at the DA Global Convention in April. There are also 8 half votes for PLEOs. The Internet primary allowed Democrats in far-flung locations to vote, including Democrat Adam Lutchansky, who is stationed at the U.S. scientific base at McMurdo, Antarctica, who voted on his computer."

Election 2008: Feb 22

To the citizens of the United States of America

In light of your failure to nominate competent candidates for
President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give
notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical
duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except
Kansas, which she does not fancy).

Your new prime minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a governor for
America without the need for further elections. Congress and the
Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next
year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the
following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary.

1. Then look up aluminum, and check the pronunciation guide. You
will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

2. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour',
'colour', behaviour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to
spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix
-ize will be replaced by the suffix -ise.

Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to
acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary').

3. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler
noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and
inefficient form of communication.

There is no such thing as US English. We will let Microsoft know on
your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take
account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of -ize.
You will relearn your original national anthem, God Save The Queen.

4. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

5. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns,
lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and
therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent.

Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough
to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist
then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.

6. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry
anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be
required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

7. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and this is
for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will
understand what we mean.

8. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you
will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same
time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the
benefit of conversion tables.

Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the
British sense of humour.

9. The Former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been
calling gasoline)-roughly $6/US gallon. Get used to it.

10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French
fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling
potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut,
fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

11. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not
actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be
referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted
provenance will be referred to as Lager.

South African beer is also acceptable as they are pound for pound the
greatest sporting Nation on earth and it can only be due to the
beer. They are also part of British Commonwealth - see what it did
for them.

12. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors
as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English
actors to play English characters.

Watching Andie McDowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings
and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed
with a cheese grater.

13. You will cease playing American football. There is only one
kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave
enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some
similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping
for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour
like a bunch of nancies). Don't try Rugby - the South Africans and
Kiwis will thrash you, like they regularly thrash us.

14. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable
to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not
played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware that
there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable.
You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans
first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

15. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

16. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's
Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of
all monies due (backdated to 1776).

17. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 pm with proper cups, never
mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; strawberries
in season.

God save the Queen.

Only He can.

John Cleese
